Texas Hospital Association Announces
2008-09 Board of Trustees

AUSTIN (Oct. 23, 2008) – The Texas Hospital Association will install its 2008-09 Board of Trustees during the board’s fall meeting, Oct. 30-31 in Austin. Barclay Berdan, FACHE, senior executive vice president of system alignment and performance for Texas Health Resources in Arlington, is THA’s new chairman. Michael D. Williams, FACHE, president and CEO of Community Hospital Corporation in Plano, will be installed as chairman-elect. Jon M. Foster, FACHE, president/CEO of St. David’s HealthCare in Austin, becomes immediate past chairman.

New trustees elected to serve three-year terms include:

  • James E. Buckner Jr., FACHE, chief executive officer, Uvalde Memorial Hospital;
  • Kirk A. Calhoun, M.D., president, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler;
  • Jack R. Endres, J.D., FACHE, administrator, East Texas Medical Center Jacksonville;
  • Juanita F. Romans, chief executive officer, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, Houston;
  • Thomas C. Royer, M.D., president and chief executive officer, CHRISTUS Health, Irving; 
  • Nathan Goldstein, M.D., chief medical officer, Northwest Texas Healthcare System, Amarillo; 
  • Douglas A. Matney, CHE, group vice president, Universal Health Services, Inc. – South Texas Health System, McAllen and Edinburg; and 
  • Russell P. Meyers, FACHE, president and chief executive officer, Midland Memorial Hospital. In addition, Hank Hernandez, chief executive officer of Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso, will be installed to fulfill an unexpired term on the board. His term will expire in 2009.

Trustees continuing as members of the 2008-09 THA Board of Trustees include:

  • George Hernandez Jr., J.D., University Health System, San Antonio;
  • Chris Karam, FACHE, CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System, Texarkana;
  • Tim Lancaster, FACHE, Hendrick Health System, Abilene;
  • Abe Martinez, Laredo Medical Center; 
  • Jan Reed, Electra Memorial Hospital;
  • Robert L. Smith, Tenet Healthcare Central Region, Dallas; 
  • Kent Keahey, FACHE, Providence Health Network, Waco; and

Buckner, Durovich, George Hernandez and Martinez were elected to one-year terms as at-large members of the THA Executive Committee.

Leaders of THA’s Council on Policy Development also serve on the THA Board of Trustees. The 2008-09 COPD chairman is Harold H. “Trip” Pilgrim III, president/CEO of Baptist Health System in San Antonio. Serving as vice chairman of the COPD is David S. Lopez, FACHE, president/CEO of Harris County Hospital District in Houston. Texas Healthcare Trustees representatives serving on the THA Board include THT Chair Andy Stern, immediate past chair of Medical City Dallas Hospital, and THT Chair-elect Rosemary Burns, member of the board of East Texas Medical Center Foundation in Athens.
